Health Problems and their resolution
Key:
- * = safe
- ** = helpful
- *** = very beneficial
- --- = detrimental
| Symptom |
Resolution |
| Anxiety |
(reactions seem similar to that of brain fog) |
| Ankylosing Spondylitis |
*** No Starch Diet. See http://www.kickas.org/ *** fruit fasting. Use only fruits that are low in starch eg: apples, pears, grapes *** ? Raw Wheatgerm. Probably works due to laxative effect. *** infrared lamp treatment ** eating heaps of green vegetables eg: cabbage, spinach, lettuce, brocoli * low starch fruits * low starch vegetables eg: cauliflower, cucumber, etc * meat, fish, eggs, mushrooms, etc * fat, mayonnaise, oils, etc --- grains --- legumes, beans, lentils. Most beans, peas, etc are starchy --- root vegetables |
| Candida |
*** coconut fibre *** yoghurt ** dietary fibre * greens * fresh fruit (not when juiced) -- refined sugar --- rice |
| Cystitis |
see: UTI |
| Eczema |
*** Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) such as those found in evening primrose oil (EPO), flaxseed oil, fish oils, cod liver oil, etc. I hear that flaxseed and evening primrose oils are particularly effective. |
| Enthesitis |
Symptoms: hand, knee or foot pain. Caused by inflammation at the point where the tendons connect to bones. *** No Starch Diet * rice - oats. Only a mild problem, have to eat quite a lot of oats for a reaction. -- Dairy. Yoghurt, cheese, etc are all problems. --- Wheat. Perhaps other grains are an issue. Rice is safe. --- Sugar mixed with butter / dairy fat / coconut.. a big problem when it is hot or liquid. So the worst reactions are things like hot chocolate, hot caramel, hot chocolate syrup. Give it a test one day and see if you react to one of these. See also iritis entry as there is a great deal of similarity. |
| Hand pain |
If you have AS and hand pain then it is probably caused by 'enthesitis' (see: enthesitis) |
| Iritis |
Symptom: painful inflammation inside the eye |
| Tendonitis |
see: enthesitis |
| UTI |
Urinary Tract Infection, aka: cystitis *** Bearberry leaf tea (aka: Uva Ursa, Uva Ursi). Must follow a diet that has a low Renal Acid Load in order for this herb to be effective. *** Juniper Berry tea. Use this in conjunction with the Bearberry leaves in a tea. Stick it in a thermos and have a little drink from it regularly. Make sure you don't eat too much protein or it wont help. *** Low Renal Acid Load diet. Greens, fruit, and vegetables. *?? Sandalwood oil. I hear that this is good for cystitis, but I am not certain. --- High Renal Acid Load Diet. --- High protein intake. Meat, nuts, etc. (protein foods give a high renal acid load) |
| Uveitis |

* yoghurt is safe for my iritis / AS (Comment this)
Standard disclaimer : Not to be taken if pregnant. (I think I read that it can bring on labour when taken in large amounts.. ?!??) (Comment this)
Thank you for being passionate. I was formally diagnosed with AS June 2004, but like alot of other had been suffering symptoms 8 years earlier, since 1996. I have taken a three pronged approach to minimising the impact and progression of this disease within my body which is Spirit + Body + Diet = Remission. It has taken alot of courage, determination and elimination to get to a place now where I am relatively pain free, definately 100% medication free and feeling and looking more energised than when I was being medicated. Examining my diet and committing to eat only those things that now work for my bodies new needs has been certainly a large factor in not exacerbating an already chronic condition. Second in my pyramid would have to be Spirit. The recovery from just the initial grief of this happening to me and the negative impact it initially had on my inner spirit was gigantic. I have turned my whole victim thoughts around to a point of creating positive thoughts which in turn manifest into a happier spirit. Tai Chi + meditation + hydrotherapy have also been an amazing source of relaxation. Third but not the least important has been to get my butt off the cowch. My TV viewing is so much less than it used to be. I am now more committed and engaging to getting out of the house any chance I get. The old saying, if you don't move it, you'll loose it sure means much more to me now having AS than it has ever done in my life. Stretching, Stretching, Stretching. My new mantra. I wholeheartedly encourage you to keep inspiring AS sufferers to examine their diet and adjust to their body's new needs in the course of managing the AS condition. Great work Zark!!! Keep it up and a very heartfelt thank you cyberhug from me to you. (Comment this)

quote from : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jala_neti
A typical method uses an isotonic saline solution. This roughly matches the concentration of salt found in the blood. A warm saline solution is prepared to a 0.9% salinity (9g of salt (about 1 1/2 teaspoons) per liter of water). Non-iodized salt is better. The water should feel slightly warm to the touch. Make sure to stir thoroughly to dissolve all the salt.
Recent research[1][2] has indicated that a hypertonic saline solution may be effective. This is a solution in which the concentration of salt is higher than that found in the blood. A typical concentration used in these studies was 3% salt. At this higher concentration of salt, a buffering agent is usually added to the solution to make it more comfortable.
If a home-made solution is used, the quality of the salt is important. Some practitioners recommend using Kosher salt, which has no added iodine. Fine cooking salt often contains anticaking agents that may cause irritation. Coarse sea salt is generally a good choice. Specially prepared non-iodized nasal wash salts are also available commercially. Baking soda can also be used in its place or even in conjunction with the salt. Baking soda will soften the salt so it is not as irritating to the mucus membranes.
The jala neti technique has three stages though usually only stage one is performed. Although a summary is presented here of each stage, it may be easier to learn with help from someone who has experience with jala neti and can demonstrate the technique for you. Many yoga instructors are able to teach jala neti and if they don't teach it themselves they will most likely know someone who does. Many people can learn the technique in one brief session with a qualified teacher.
Stage one
Many people only practice stage one of jala neti. This stage should always be performed whether it is the only stage you do or if you plan to do any of the more advanced stages. Each stage should eventually use about 1/4 litre (8 US fluid ounces) per nostril though a person may have to work up to this.
* Lean over a sink and tilt your head to the side and slightly down toward the sink. Ideally, the chin and the forehead should be level with each other.
* Place the spout of the neti pot in the upper nostril creating a complete seal and allow the saline solution to flow into that nostril, through the nasal passages, and out the lower nostril.
* Continue to breathe deeply through the mouth. This allows the water to flow from one nostril to another without dripping into the mouth.
* When the pot is empty, refill it and repeat on the other side. Beginners may prefer to use only half a pot on each side.
* If the water seems to be blocking, switching back and forth several times may be needed.
* If you will be doing only Stage One, follow the instructions under "After Stages are completed" to clear the nasal passages of remaining water.
